Drinking Feuerzangenbowle in the Munich Christmas Markets

On my trip to Munich I ate and drank my way through the best that the Christmas Markets could offer, including an interesting tipple called Feuerzangenbowle. 

We tried our Feuerzangenbowle at the Tollwood Festival, a crafty, ethnic and organic (or Bio, as it’s called in Germany) market, held on the same Theresienwiese Fairground where you’ll find the more famous Oktoberfest beer festival in the autumn.

What is Feuerzangenbowle?

This variation on mulled wine has an extra kick in the form of a shot of rum and amaretto liqueur and was served in an earthenware mug with a spout. On the spout was placed a lump of sugar, then a shot of spirit was poured over and the whole thing set alight.

The blue flames licked over the feuerzangenbowle in the same way as we flame a Christmas pudding, and we had to wait for them to subside and the mug to cool before we could risk taking a sip. I coughed as the alcoholic vapours hit the back of my throat and the warm glow of rum set in.

Now I understood why these mulled wines are so popular at the Christmas markets as the bitter cold lost it’s chill as I drank. Just the thing to make me forget the sub-zero temperatures!
